Alasdair Pennington Quintet

It was really smooth jazz music. The drummer was making very percussive, unusual sounds on the drum kit. He was not detracting the attention from the other members but was subtly gliding around the drum kit.

There was a contrast of performing styles from the musicians. Some members were performing and communicating the tunes whereas some members were purely absorbed in the music, in their musical bubble. These had different qualities to them and created a heart felt communication of their music. The musical evening started off as a performance but then became the atmosphere.

In the spirit of jazz they took it in turns to improvise. They were swelling together creating a magical spell. Their instruments being an extent of their beings, communicating expressively.

The Staves

It was an incredible coincidence discovering the Staves. They were a support act for First Aid Kit and we were very pleasantly surprised. Their performance was all to do with the music , the sound. They hardly moved on stage and there was no complicated lighting. The set was an electric purple glow that filled the whole stage with a wall of solid colour. Their music melted my heart. Their voices created a ray of ephemeral sound that filled the whole huge concert hall, completely surrounding and engulfing you. Extremely high energy performance. Every member was constantly grinning and bouncing around for 2 hours of intense mayhem, they must have been exhausted. They were absolutely bonkers. T hey entered the stage with a robot warning tone, and then all came out wearing a bright yellow football uniform looking like bees and holding a sign that said HEY. It was the weirdest mix of music that I have ever experienced but it was impossible to stand still. It was Shrillex mixed with pop punk, mixed with rap and Bosnian traditional music. After discussing we agreed that 2 1/2 songs was the perfect amount before a break was needed as you went from loving to hating with no in between. Edinburgh Fringe

Edinburgh Fringe Shows Wednesday 31st July The grey cat and the flounder  (studio 1, George square) Interesting concept. Elements theoretically could have worked and been very clever and different. A not children’s children show. Very American. Ear phones more immersive Completely bizarre Wierd wierd story Didn’t enjoy Puppetry funny Elements too long 4/10 Bible John  (pleasance) About True Crime and women murdered. The unpicking of a case. Very fast paced. Lots of different stage drama techniques. 4 girls. Very busy performance. Used repetition and dance. Aunty  (the box George square) Kiwi crazy aunt. Major audience interaction. Very intimate. Lots of teasing. Lots of wine. Very funny. I believe in Merkels (roxy downstairs) Nicola Sturgeon, Theresa May and Angela Merkel cabaret burlesque lip sync. Really good fun.
