DUDS

The blueness of the stage was so atmospheric. You could see the different light beams as they came down like an explosion of colour. At points as well t here was bright pink bouncing off everyone at the same time that the performers were bouncing around in a blue haze that enveloped them and it was so ambient. It is music like I have never heard before extremely unusual but extremely charming . Their syncopated beats, focus on percussion and energy was mesmerising and I will remember it for a very long time. All I can think off is a modern Devo mixed with punk and ska? It was jumpy, percussive, unnerving, almost of out tune syncopated playing. You could not stand still even though you didn’t know how to dance to the irregular beats and bars which made everyone look like idiots bouncing around. There was a lot of energy from the band and the audience. The percussionist was jumping around frantically hitting everything. He had his arm in a plaster cast and was having to work twice a...

Goat Girl

The band didn't have a lost of stage presence. They were very focused on being vessels for the music, focusing on the music making and not the audience. There was a little girl on the shoulders of her dad on our left and she was having an amazing time moving her arms around, transfixed to the band, in her own little world. Their music is really unusual. Its uplifting, funky, jarring, sad and mellow. The singer seems like she can’t be bothered and is really laid back and chilled which comes across in her vocals. The jarring grating sound of their harmonies combined with the grittiness of the vocals puts you on edge. Its as if she is singing with sarcastic sweetness which reflects their aesthetic. It’s really interesting to listen to. Goat Girl Green Man Festival, Wales 20.08.18

The Vaccines

I only knew one song of this band but went because my friend wanted to go. To my surprise I actually had a really good time.  There was such a lovely relaxed atmosphere where  we could just stand in the same spot and enjoy yourself without being worried about what’s going on around you or being distracted or bothered by it. It was really nice seeing everyone of all ages singing along and enjoying themselves. The lead singer seemed to love himself but he was transfixing to watch. He was parading around on the stage in very striking bell bottom trousers, looking as if he hadn't grown up from the 80s. All of the rest of the band seemed to be hidden in the background (the guitarist s eemed quite shy ). The music is really feel-good and it was really easy to pick up the melodies and choruses to the songs to join in singing along. The Vaccines Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh  11.08.18

Bastille

It was amazing when the singer of Bastille came into the audience. I really admire him because he managed to keep perfectly singing whilst everyone was trying to push and touch him. What is the fascination of touching someone famous? Does it really make you feel closer to them? It really brought to light that although he is hugely famous, he is just a normal human being. It was hilarious to watch the other members of the band also wanting the limelight , the drummer especially. Every now and then he would come to the front of the stage and just stand there thinking he was Jack Black. When the singer came off-stage the guitarist and the drummer were playing catch with drumsticks and you could only see that gem of a moment if you weren’t obsessed with the lead singer. The stage l ighting extremely impressive , especially in the song Pompeii where the stage basically exploded with red (volcano lava) lighting. It was incredibly atmospheric. My favourite part of the performance was...
