Goat Girl

The band didn't have a lost of stage presence. They were very focused on being vessels for the music, focusing on the music making and not the audience.


There was a little girl on the shoulders of her dad on our left and she was having an amazing time moving her arms around, transfixed to the band, in her own little world.
Their music is really unusual. Its uplifting, funky, jarring, sad and mellow. The singer seems like she can’t be bothered and is really laid back and chilled which comes across in her vocals. The jarring grating sound of their harmonies combined with the grittiness of the vocals puts you on edge. Its as if she is singing with sarcastic sweetness which reflects their aesthetic. It’s really interesting to listen to.

The Staves

It was an incredible coincidence discovering the Staves. They were a support act for First Aid Kit and we were very pleasantly surprised. Their performance was all to do with the music , the sound. They hardly moved on stage and there was no complicated lighting. The set was an electric purple glow that filled the whole stage with a wall of solid colour. Their music melted my heart. Their voices created a ray of ephemeral sound that filled the whole huge concert hall, completely surrounding and engulfing you. Extremely high energy performance. Every member was constantly grinning and bouncing around for 2 hours of intense mayhem, they must have been exhausted. They were absolutely bonkers. T hey entered the stage with a robot warning tone, and then all came out wearing a bright yellow football uniform looking like bees and holding a sign that said HEY. It was the weirdest mix of music that I have ever experienced but it was impossible to stand still. It was Shrillex mixed with pop punk, mixed with rap and Bosnian traditional music. After discussing we agreed that 2 1/2 songs was the perfect amount before a break was needed as you went from loving to hating with no in between. Edinburgh Fringe

Edinburgh Fringe Shows Wednesday 31st July The grey cat and the flounder  (studio 1, George square) Interesting concept. Elements theoretically could have worked and been very clever and different. A not children’s children show. Very American. Ear phones more immersive Completely bizarre Wierd wierd story Didn’t enjoy Puppetry funny Elements too long 4/10 Bible John  (pleasance) About True Crime and women murdered. The unpicking of a case. Very fast paced. Lots of different stage drama techniques. 4 girls. Very busy performance. Used repetition and dance. Aunty  (the box George square) Kiwi crazy aunt. Major audience interaction. Very intimate. Lots of teasing. Lots of wine. Very funny. I believe in Merkels (roxy downstairs) Nicola Sturgeon, Theresa May and Angela Merkel cabaret burlesque lip sync. Really good fun.
